Valdaora is one of the three ski resorts (to the east) that form the basis of the Plan de Corones area, along with Brunico to the north and San Vigilio to the south. It is the most exclusive of the three, as it has some of the most impressive and luxurious hotels in the area. It is an ideal base for hiking in the Fanes-Senne-Braies Natural Park. It was in Valdaora that a farmer is said to have invented the böckl, a rudimentary kind of sled consisting of a ski with a stool on top. It was in fact used throughout South Tyrol. Recently students have perfected it for more comfort and speed and use it to move around.
