To the north of Brunico, the Val di Tures cuts a wide, green and fairly flat furrow along the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina nature park. At the northern end of the valley, beyond the village of Campo Tures, the mountains seem to close in like an impregnable wall. The village castle stands like a sentinel guarding the narrow neck of land that leads to the Aurina valley. Around 5,400 inhabitants live year-round in this Italian commune, which in German is called Sand in Taufers. On the outskirts of the village, the Riva waterfalls are well worth a visit, offering a pleasant stroll through the woods.
