The history of this city is linked to that of a brother, Padre Pio. It was in the convent of San Giovanni Rotondo that this Capuchin received the stigmata and became one of the most famous religious of his time (after the Pope!). He was the founder of the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, one of the most modern hospitals in southern Italy. Padre Pio's tomb is in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in a marble and granite sarcophagus. A major pilgrimage site, the city also offers some old stones: the round temple of St. John, built on the site of a temple of Janus, the churches of St. Onofrio (14th century) and St. Ursula (17th century).
