After the pass of Mount Devio lies Lake Varano (10 km long and 8 km wide), which is in fact a lagoon, one of the largest in the region. More mysterious than its neighbour Lesina, it shelters on its western shore the ghost town of San Nicola Imbuto, former base for seaplanes during the two world wars. The landscape is now deserted, even biblical, without people or vegetation. In the surrounding area you can see some 13th century Angevin towers and the ruins of medieval buildings. If you are there at low tide, you can admire the crucifix of Varano, emerging from the waters of the lake.
