One of the gateways to the Gargano, Rignano owes its name of "balcony of Puglia" to its position on the heights, overlooking the Tavoliere plain. Although the first mention of the town dates back to the year 1100, not much remains of the town except for the tower and the feudal palace. As the town is almost empty of its inhabitants (most of them work in Foggia or San Severo), people used to come here to visit its very important archaeological site, around the Paglicci cave, but it has been closed to the public. Here is produced one of the best breads of the region, prepared according to recipes handed down from generation to generation by the women of the village.
