Foggia, in the heart of the vast agricultural plain of the Tavoliere, is not a stunning place. The origins of the town date back to the Norman period, when Robert Guiscard undertook the reclamation of the marshy area around the ancient Arpi. Foggia became the capital of the town and enjoyed a period of prosperity under Frederick II, who made it a strategic military base and established one of the first trade fairs in Italy. Today, Foggia is an important communications hub and contributes to the agricultural development of the entire region. Rebuilt after the earthquake of 1731 and the last war, Foggia has few monuments.
