This bastion of the duchy of Puglia owed its importance, in medieval times, to its strategic geographical location between Naples and southern Italy. Of its august past, the city preserves only its splendid Romanesque cathedral, considered one of the masterpieces of the style. The construction of the cathedral began with the foundation of the village of Troia at the end of the 11th century and was not completely finished until the 13th century. The town was largely destroyed by the troops of Frederick II in 1229. The old town center consists of a main street lined with churches (the church of San Basilio, from the 11th century, is the oldest) from which start alleys with a medieval look.
