On the road that goes from Potenza to Vulture, there is the most mysterious and magical castle of Frederick II. Less well known than the one in Melfi, the castle of Lagopesole is strongly imbued with the spirit of the great Swabian emperor, who built it and lived there from 1242 until his death in 1250. It is therefore the last castle of this emperor, who had it built shortly before his death. Located on the road leading to Puglia, it was his hunting ground and a peaceful place to rest. However, it is said that before the Logopesole castle of Frederick II, there was another castle on this site, which was the scene of the reconciliation between Pope Innocent II and Abbot Rinaldo of Montecassino, in the presence of Lothar of Saxony, during the war against Roger the Norman. As for the castle of Frederick II, it was later, in 1268 and in 1294, the residence of Charles of Anjou. In 1416 it became, along with Melfi, the property of the Caracciolo family. In 1531 it was donated by Charles V to the Doria family and was then temporarily transformed into a museum, becoming an emblem of the history and soul of Lucania.
