On the road from Monte Sant'Angelo to San Severo, the area of San Marco in Lamis offers a beautiful view of a wooded valley. The deepest cave of the Gargano ("grava di Campolato") is located here. The layout of the town is strange, with its neighbourhoods of houses huddled together back to back. Its history is linked to that of the sanctuary of San Matteo, which was influential in the 11th and 12th centuries. The Sanctuary of San Matteo and the Convent of Santa Maria di Stignano, located along the 272 state road, are essential stops for thousands of pilgrims walking the "Sacred Way of the Lombards".
