The ancient and prosperous Republic of Noli, the fifth maritime republic, is today one of the most elegant cities in the entire Ponente Riviera. Noli is recognizable by its eight towers that loom over the horizon, a reminder of the 72 erected in the 12th century. Even Dante speaks of Noli in the Divine Comedy: he compares the rough and rocky roads that lead to the town to those of Purgatory (so much for that...). The well-preserved architectural heritage offers to the curious eyes ancient portals, beautiful houses of the 13th and 14th centuries, as well as the still standing ramparts that go up to the top of the hill
