Caserta is synonymous with the Royal Palace. In the 18th century, Charles of Bourbon, King of Naples, decided to build a huge palace based on the Versailles model. The greatest artists were invited to take part in the project, such as the famous architect Luigi Vanvitelli, who drew the plans. The architecture of this grandiosereggia, a symbol of royal power, combines two styles: Neapolitan baroque and neoclassical. The palace is now surrounded by the modern city. On the heights, the medieval town of Casertavecchia has a 12th-century cathedral that incorporates Arab-Sicilian elements and the ruins of a castle
