Beyond its concrete facades and empty lots, Vieste looks like a large fishing village that seems to be embedded in the cliff. It has become one of the most touristic places of the Gargano with 200,000 tourists a day in summer. This small town, which is now called the "capital of the Gargano", is an important centre of commercial activities (fishing and agriculture) and tourism. The historic centre, with its stairways and narrow arcaded streets, is very picturesque in some places, while in others it is modern and airy with wide avenues. Dominated by its castle built under Frederick II, Vieste is today a fishing port and a renowned seaside resort. Its large sandy beaches and excellent facilities cater to a rather upscale tourism. In Vieste, the tourist season is very marked: the streets are empty in winter and almost all the infrastructures are closed. In the summer, it is full to bursting... and it becomes difficult to breathe! We advise you to go there in the middle season, May and end of September being the most pleasant times. The medieval village is well preserved. If you stroll around, you will see some beautiful monuments, such as the castle or the splendid cathedral.
