The village of Monte Sant'Angelo is one of the architectural treasures of the Gargano region. Its history is linked to that of a grotto-sanctuary dedicated to Saint Michael, which was owned in turn by the Byzantines and then by the Lombards. From the middle of the 10th century onwards, the sanctuary became an obligatory stopover for the crusaders on their way to the Holy Land, as well as for the popes and the (future) saints Thomas Aquinas and Francis of Assisi. Perched on the southern spur of the promontory, Monte Sant'Angelo now lives on agriculture and tourism, the latter mainly due to the presence of the shrine.
