CHIESA SANTA MARIA MAGGIORE
Romanesque church famous for its Byzantine frescoes in Monte Sant'Angelo.
This Romanesque church is best known for its Byzantine frescoes, in particular those depicting the archangel St. Michael. The beautifully sculpted portal features a depiction of the "Mater Dei" on her throne, surrounded by the archangels St. Michael and St. Gabriel, and of Constance of Hauteville and her son Frederick II, kneeling. Next door is the "Tomb of Rothari", a 12th-century baptistery covered by a dome and decorated with bas-reliefs.
