Spišská Nová Ves is the administrative, cultural and commercial center of the Spiš region. The town was part of the community of Spiš and was under the control of the Polish crown for 360 years. It thrived on its metal industry, mines and handicrafts, particularly bell casting. From 1871, its economy was boosted by the construction of the Košice-Bohumín railroad line. Today, although the town is not a must-see on a trip to Slovakia, it is an interesting base for exploring the Slovak Paradise or the Tatras, which can be seen on the horizon.
