The of the name of this large agricultural village in Milan is quite strange: «quator ara», the altar of death. His origin dates back to a furious battle (12 October 773) which pitted the Lombards at Charlemagne's Franc. The altar of death would be the one where more than 70 000 soldiers would have sacrificed themselves. A tragic event that Ariosto recalls in his work Orlando furioso. On the scene of the battle was built an abbey, Sant'Albino Abbey. This church has an elegant th century portico and interesting th century frescoes inside. In the centre of Mortara, don't miss a visit to the college of San Lorenzo. Built between 1375 and 1380, it is a beautiful building with Gothic style, which preserves several works of art of a certain prestige inside.Famous for the gastronomic tradition of everything connected to the goose, every last Saturday in September, we celebrate goose salami on the city square. In the program, race of geese, parades in costume and play.
