Former capital of the Monferrato marquisate, Casale was a military stronghold in the 16th century before falling into the hands of the Savoys in 1713. The town's wealth stems from its exceptional geographical position. The historic center, bounded by the perimeter walls that no longer exist, is rich in artistic testimony. The highest point, the Paleologi castle, stands at the entrance to the town, and all around it, the vineyards seem to stand sentinel. Like a mantle, they tumble down the hills and extend as far as Asti and the province of Turin. Casale is a leading industrial hub and an important wine-producing center.
