Alessandria, the first town in Monferrato, is the capital of a rich industrial region. It was founded in 1168 during the historic struggle between the Emperor and the Papacy. It was named Alessandria by the supporters of Pope Alexander III, who were opposed to Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. An important military stronghold from the 18th century onwards under the reign of the Savoys, the construction of a defensive citadel is the most telling evidence of this. Alessandria can be explored in half a day. While the main thoroughfares may seem rather austere, the pedestrian lanes in the center and the Piazza Libertà are home to some fine old palaces.
