Founded in 120 BC, many traces of Tortona's past have been preserved. The town reached its peak of splendor during the time of the Communes. Besieged and destroyed by Frederick Barbarossa, it came under the control of the Viscontis, Dukes of Milan, in 1347. In 1738, the town became part of the Savoy family. Heir to an illustrious past, Tortona no longer offers as many attractions and concentrates on its industrial and commercial activities. It remains a culinary landmark worthy of mention for its exquisite pastries. The area is also known as the home of Fausto Coppi, the famous cycling champion: his birthplace is in Castellania.
