Nestling at the foot of the imposing Monte Rosa (4,633 m a.s.l. at its highest point, the second highest massif in the Alps after Mont Blanc), the small town of Alagna Valsesia was founded in the 13th century by the Walsers, a German-speaking people who migrated from the Swiss canton of Valais to colonize the then uninhabited Alpine valleys. A museum dedicated to their history and culture has been set up in a perfectly preserved Walser chalet dating back to 1628! Alagna has, of course, been a ski resort for some sixty years, linked to the neighboring Gressoney-La Trinité ski area in Valle d'Aosta.
