Pavia, a pretty little town (population 71,000) on the banks of the Ticino, is one of Lombardy's most important centers. Bordered by over 80,000 hectares of rice fields, it lies at the heart of Italy's largest rice-growing region. Pavia boasts a well-preserved historic center with a number of architectural gems, the most famous of which is its Carthusian monastery, located just a few kilometers away in the eponymous village of Certosa di Pavia. Particularly famous for its university, one of the oldest in Europe, Pavia is home to many students who liven up the town's streets and squares throughout the day (and night!).
