With around 70,000 inhabitants, Massa is the largest town in Tuscany's northernmost province. It offers little in the way of tourist attractions, serving mainly as a base for the nearby seaside resort of Marina di Massa. It does, however, boast a number of fine restaurants, the beautiful Palazzo Ducale, a cathedral built entirely of marble, and the region's most famous castle, Malaspina, overlooking the town. A word of advice on accommodation: it's best to stay in Marina di Massa. In terms of transport, Massa lies on the railroad line between Pisa and La Spezia, which also serves Viareggio and Carrara-Avenza.
