7 kilometers south of Viareggio, this quiet little town is associated with the great composer Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924), who lived and worked here and is buried in the chapel. It was here that he composed many of his illustrious operas. Every summer, the famous Puccini Festival (www.puccinifestival.it) attracts no fewer than 40,000 spectators from all over Europe to enjoy lyrical music in an open-air theater. The town is also worth a visit for the Villa Puccini, near Lake Massaciuccoli, where the master liked to retire (and where you can take a boat trip), and for the 19th-century Villa Borbone.
