Before the massive arrival of foreign workers, who came to work at the Soumont-Saint-Quentin iron mine, Potigny was a small, peaceful village with barely 250 souls at the beginning of the 20th century. It was a classic rural village, with the church of Our Lady of the Rosary, built in the 13th century and now classified as a historical monument, at its centre The history of Potigny is closely linked to the history of Poland. The development of industry saw a great wave of immigration between 1924 and 1931. Some 3,000 Poles were employed by the Soumont mine, hence the name "Little Warsaw" given to the town
