This small commune, situated between the Caen plain and the Falaise countryside, is home to just under 1,000 Vassonnaise inhabitants. In addition to its menhir of the Roche Piquée dating from the Neolithic period, at a place called Le Peugray, and the 14th century bell tower of the parish church, both listed as Historic Monuments, Saint-Germain-le-Vasson is well known for its intense mining activity. In the Armorican sandstone, partly dug by the Laize, important deposits of iron ore were exploited for a century, until the mine was closed in 1989. The old Carreau de Livet was then transformed into a wonderful museum
