Birthplace of William the Conqueror, Falaise was built around his castle. A crossroads town, an artisanal and commercial town, it developed the fur trade and drapery, quickly becoming prosperous. Its Guibray fair was one of the most important in France and, in the last century, Falaise was the second largest town in Calvados after Caen. The Second World War put an end to this boom. The Falaise pocket was the scene of the last operation of the Battle of Normandy and was heavily bombed. Ruined, the city has been rebuilt with respect for its monuments and is today a charming city very much appreciated.
