Located on the Priamar hill, Savona is the provincial capital. Here, we've left the small villages of via Emilia behind and entered a commercial and industrial center. The port of Savona is one of the most important on the coast. First and foremost, it is a renowned maritime port of call, as evidenced by the volume of traffic in excess of 15 million tonnes (mainly oil and coal). However, this was not always the case, as Genoa lost usufruct of the port for several centuries. Traditionally opposed to Genoa, the latter triumphantly destroyed its port in 1528, and it was only with Napoleon that the port was rebuilt and Savona was once again able to use it as its main asset. While in Savona, take time to admire the monumental fortress built in the 16th century, and visit the town's Pinacoteca, an exceptional museum featuring masterpieces of ancient paintings and majolica, which the town has mastered for centuries.
