Toirano, 11 km north of Albenga, is a small town made famous by the discovery in 1950 of prehistoric caves that attract tourists from around the world. In reality, the town of Toirano has other surprises in store. Its old urban setting has been well preserved and keeps the memory of an agricultural past. A small ethnographic museum exhibits the relics of the daily peasant activities of the past. The beautiful abbey church of San Pietro in Varatella keeps the spirituality alive, while one can go for miles to taste its sweet wine, the passito di moscato, on sale here and there at the small local producers
