Kintamani was the district capital during the Dutch administration. In the early days of tourism, it was an important stopping-off point for travellers arriving from Surabaya or Singapore via the Singaraja port of Buleleng.Today, Batur and Kintamani virtually form a single municipality, which, apart from the temple, is of little tourist interest. Every 3 days, the market unfolds in the middle of the street, displaying all its local produce: citrus fruits, fruits and a few specimens of Balinese mountain dogs. From Kintamani, the road climbs further and further north to reach the village of Penulisan. The view of the crater is superb. A staircase of 333 steps leads up to Pura Tegeh Koripan, also known as Pura Puncak Penulisan, at 1,745 m, the highest in Bali. It's also one of the island's oldest, with 11 terraces and ancient architecture reminiscent of the pyramidal structures of the Megalithic Age. The temple comprises 4 complexes located in different parts of the Bukit Penulisan on which it is built. Some statues date back to the 11th and 12th centuries, while inscriptions date back to the 9th century. The highest temple in the complex is Pura Panarajon, dedicated to Shiva. It contains stone statues that historians liken to the Balinese megalithic style. A donation at the temple entrance, or in the upper temple, is required.
