The village of Manggis lies inland, but its beach is home to Candidasa's most luxurious hotels. Buitan is a small coastal village just beyond Manggis, 4 km east of Candidasa, where you'll find a small stretch of black sand beach.Along the black sand beach, you'll see salt huts, and the large prahu (outrigger boats) that can hold up to 5 people and over a ton of cargo. The huts are conical with brown thatched roofs. Each is a small traditional salt factory. The salt workers first spread wet sand on the beach, then, after drying it, scrape out the salt, which they then place in a large container under the hut for decanting. Salt water is added, and the salt is dried again in coconut trunks cut in half and hollowed out until crystals appear. The fleur de sel harvested is of excellent quality, among the best in the world. Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer salt workers, as the work is hard and not as lucrative as tourism. The activity is closely linked to the weather, so during the rainy season, harvests are difficult. It is possible to buy this exceptional fleur de sel from street vendors. The road runs alongside the sea, offering a beautiful view of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida.
