Bedulu was also the capital of a great kingdom until the conquest of Bali by the Mojopahit empire. Legend has it that King Beda Ulu had magical powers. He could cut off his own head and put it back on whenever he wanted, which assured him of his place among the deities and thus a political freedom of movement among his people. One day while he was engaged in his favorite activity, his opponents placed a pig's head in place of his and threw the original into the river, where it was lost. The king could not maintain his ascendancy and Gajah Mada, Prime Minister of Mojopahit, defeated him in 1343.
