The same name, the same sun-kissed surfers, the same waves as far as the eye can see... But the two Kutas, Bali's and Lombok's, are nothing alike! The latter is as quiet as the former, overrun with hotels, bars, restaurants and noisy nightclubs, and its beaches are infinitely more beautiful.Kuta has three tourist seasons spread throughout the year (in December, when it welcomes Australians; in March, for the famous Nyale festival; and in August, when Westerners arrive), but you should try to get there in the off-season, when this small seaside town reverts to a small fishing port where not a single tourist ventures. Then you'll enjoy absolute peace and quiet, disturbed only by the occasional bonfire on the beach, for quiet evenings. People come to Kuta to relax on the beach, to watch time go by slowly, or to take up surfing (there's something for everyone) and enjoy the big waves. This quiet village consists of a seaside road where you'll find a few hotels and losmen, as well as a few huts where Sasaks offer sarongs and souvenirs for sale, and a long beach of white sand next to a turquoise sea that invites you to swim. In the distance, numerous karst reliefs - identical to those in southern Thailand or eastern China - rise from the sea, surrounded by mangroves. The sea is sublimely blue. Arid hills and cliffs overhang stretches of golden sand. It should be a happy place for centuries to come...
