Once the island's capital and leading trading port, Singaraja has known glory, wars, the Dutch, colonialism, wealth... and then slowly fell asleep. Despite its 100,000 inhabitants, Singaraja has the impression of a chaotic, heat-swept town, far from the hustle and bustle of tourists and the shade and coolness of the mountains. Yet the streets and avenues are lined with trees, and the silhouettes of old colonial mansions can still be seen behind a few wide sidewalks. The traveller is usually only passing through this dusty, noisy provincial town. The port is no longer active. Singaraja, on the other hand, is home to 2 Chinese temples and a museum, whose library contains Bali's most important collection of lontars . These texts, engraved on young palm leaves, are an inexhaustible source of information on the island's history, the medical knowledge of ancient peoples and magical secrets.
