Around 1728, settlers came to settle on the island. They farmed and hunted beluga whales, which they called porpoises, for their oil. Until the end of the 1950s, the island was home to shipyards where watercraft were built - simple bark canoes, heavy canoes, rowboats, then schooners (both sailing and motor) - adapted for navigation on the river. Schooners were used for coastal shipping and porpoise hunting. This is where filmmaker Pierre Perrault shot his documentaries on porpoise hunting and watercraft in the 1960s, which helped to make the island better known.
