Its name would come from two villages in the county of Gloucester in England. Its small St. Peter's Church (1839) and cemetery bear witness to the settlement of the townships by English-speaking immigrants. Today, Stoneham is best known for its ski resort, one of the largest east of the Rockies. The resort offers other activities, summer and winter, as well as a hotel located at the foot of the slopes. The area is also known for the Jacques-Cartier River rapids, which can be crossed by rafting, and within a few kilometres are Jacques-Cartier National Park and the Laurentian Wildlife Reserve.
