The site of several Scottish and Irish settlers in 1817, it has been a major military base (Valcartier) since the First World War. This Canadian Forces base is part of the Land Force Quebec Area and houses the2nd Canadian Division. These soldiers intervene in various critical situations in Quebec, such as during the major floods experienced by several municipalities in 2019. Apart from this base, Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier is best known for its Village Vacances Valcartier as well as for the famous Hôtel de Glace, whose reputation extends beyond the country's borders.
