The city is built on the side of the Notre-Dame Mountains, facing the Laurentian Mountains. Its three hills are home to the parishes of Saint-Ludger and Saint-François-Xavier. Saint-Patrice is a seaside resort that has welcomed such illustrious people as Prime Ministers Louis St. Laurent and John A. Macdonald, whose residences can be admired. The region only really took off in the 19th century with the expansion of the railroad, and then had its moment of glory when the Trans-Canada Highway stopped there. Today, it lives to the rhythm of the river traffic on the St. Lawrence. There is a ferry to Saint-Siméon on the north shore.
