It was the last land route - or portage - before the river (when arriving from Lake Témiscouata, inland), which explains its name. This route had always been followed by the Amerindians coming from the Maritime provinces. With the arrival of the white man, the trail became a postal route and a military trail. Notre-Dame-du-Portage is very busy in season. Its geographical location on the river makes it a sought-after resort. Try the heated saltwater pool near the wharf (where you can still fish for smelt) and the excellent pizzas at the Pizzeria des Battures.
