Paléostomi Lake and its surrounding area are the only remaining remnant of the ancient "Colchide" ecosystem, which was dried up by the Soviets in 1920-1930. Stalin created the park at the same time as he destroyed the rest of the ecosystem! It is a marshlands, subtropical and humid area dating back to the tertiary period, which can be seen on-line residues throughout the Eurasian continent. This wetland zone has an archaic and rich biodiversity, which is precious testimony from the tertiary to us. More than 21 species of fish are present in the lake, and types of migratory birds come from Europe in the winter. As for the story, in January 2008, winter was particularly harsh in Georgia. The lake froze for the first time at least 800 years! Another curious anecdote, the Greek physicist Hippocrates traveled in the area in the th century BC; it described that people were strangely living on the wetlands, traveling by boat and drank rainwater. He says strangely that they were so big and so big that he could not see their faces! Twenty-three centuries later, Alexandre Dumas will cross the same area by boat, on the swamps, suffering from the humidity of this unhealthy climate, evoking many other curious anecdotes.
