The park was created in 1972 to protect a spectacular gorge with steep walls carved into the volcanic rock. It is operated in partnership with the Friends of Ouimet Canyon Park. With a surface area of 777 hectares, it is mainly visited for its impressive 150-metre wide canyon, bordered by steep walls plunging for a hundred metres. It is in the bed of this canyon that arctic plants have taken up residence, which are generally non-existent at this latitude (they are more likely to be found some 1,000 kilometres further north). Two lookouts allow you to see the extent of this incredibly beautiful landscape.
