This is probably the easiest, but also the most exotic nature getaway from Taipei. Yangmingshan, Taiwan's smallest national park (11,455 ha), was established on 16 September 1985. Belonging to the Taipei district, it extends over the districts of Shilin and Beitou. The Yangmingshan Mountain was born several million years ago, when the Philippine Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate. This violent shock resulted in volcanic activity and incandescent magma covered northern Taiwan, creating the Datun Volcanic Group to which the 20 mountains in the park, rising between 200 m and 1,120 m, belong.
