If you have chosen to go up towards the Omalos plateau, the last village in the plain is Fournes, which is reached by following the course of the river Platanias (or Keritis, depending) and which is a relatively important centre of agricultural production, with a cooperative. If you go on a hike, this is the place to stop for supplies. The Church of the Ascension of the Virgin was built with stones from a temple of the Hellenic period (Panclemos Aphrodite) and, if that's all you need to do to stretch your legs, there are rumoured to be the remains of "Cyclopean" walls from the 4th century in the vicinity.
