The wild peninsula of Gramvoussa juts out into the sea and points north, past Kissamos. It is topped by the offshore island of the same name and is home to some of the most beautiful sites in Crete and even in Greece, including the turquoise beach of Balos. If you are dreaming of a paradise lagoon, look no further. There are two options for discovering this natural treasure: a somewhat difficult trail that is off limits to rental cars other than 4×4, a three-hour hike without shade that is a bit strenuous but very rewarding, or a day cruise from the port of Kissamos. All three options have their advantages and disadvantages, so it's up to you to decide which you prefer. Note that if you go to the peninsula by car or on foot, you can reach Balos and the wild coves at the time of your choice and thus avoid the crowds and the boats that ruin the landscape in high season. You will have a completely different vision of these virgin and preserved places. The disadvantage: you will miss the island of Gramvoussa in the north and spectacular seascapes on the way. In particular, in the bay of Kissamos, the Tarsanas cave is particularly impressive: 100 meters high, it is believed to have been used as an arsenal in ancient times. In the vicinity there is an ancient city, the ancient Agneion. The small village of Kaliviani guards the entrance to the peninsula. With its square and its kafeneion, it is worth a visit. You will find a few rooms to rent and a nice lunch or dinner for those who wish to stay on the peninsula, beyond a simple day trip. Otherwise, head for Balos and the island of Gramvoussa as early or as late as possible to be alone.
