The Minoan palace, which occupies this site of Phaestos, is the second most important of Crete after that of Knossos: it presents the same architectural characteristics and thus appreciably resembles it. Contrary to Knossos, the archaeologists did not rebuild here partially the palace, being satisfied to release it as well as possible. The site, dominating the plain of Messara, was deliberately chosen for the spectacular sight which it offers and all seems to indicate that the place was decorated with cascades, fountains and luxuriant gardens. The place is less spectacular than Knossos, but enthusiasts may appreciate more the authenticity of this place. The beauty and the strength of this site are also due to the fact that its surroundings have remained completely untouched by any tourist complex, tavern or café. Here, we just contemplate the Minoan palace and the magnificence of nature. Absolute calm (unless you fall at the same time as a bus of tourists, because the place is less visited than Knossos)!
