Armeni is famous for its Minoan necropolis which has been excavated since the late 1960s. This large necropolis dating from the postpalatial period (1400 BC) is composed of 280 tombs dug in the rock, of all sizes and some of which, huge, can be visited. The most impressive is the tomb n° 200, tholos or circular tomb, to which one reaches by a passage in staircase of almost 5 m length. The most beautiful pieces of offerings excavated from these funerary monuments that housed members belonging to the same family are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno, but to see the site as a whole and in its environment is worth the trip.
