Located 8-9 kilometers from Plakias and Myrthios via Lefkovias, at the exit of the impressive Kortaliotiko Gorge, where a strong, incessant wind often blows, we follow the Megalopotomos River, over which a 19th-century Venetian-style bridge has been built. Continuing along the road, you come across the remains of the Agios Ioannis monastery (the former site of the present-day monastery) before reaching the Moni Preveli (Preveli monastery) overlooking the Libyan Sea. From the parking lot below, you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the south coast. Between the two monasteries, a small road on the left climbs up to a parking area, from where a steep path leads down to the beautiful Preveli beach, nicknamed Palm Beach because of its famous palm grove: for good reason, it's one of the few in the world with wild populations of phoenix theophrasti, a variety of palm native to the island. The grove was devastated by fire in the summer of 2010, but grows back a little more each year. Allow 10 minutes for the descent and 15 minutes for the ascent. Make sure you're well shod and don't take on too much - it's a tough trail!
