At sunset, the view of this medieval town perched on a rocky promontory is breathtaking. It's one of the island's most dazzling sights. The old fortified town slopes down from its promontory to the sea. The other side has been invaded by an unsightly modern town. The town thrives on its traditional basket-making industry and tourism. In summer, crowds flock to the fortifications, breaking with the tranquility of the winding streets. But while tourism is concentrated around the Castello, the lower part of the old town has remained very authentic. It's a remarkable site, worthy of its reputation as the pearl of Sardinia.
