Second largest island of the archipelago, Caprera is the island of Garibaldi. The father of Italian unity lived there for 20 years and died in 1882. The island is connected to La Maddalena by a dike bridge dating from 1891. The flora of this island is particularly preserved: pine forests, cork oaks, Mediterranean scrub planted with myrtle and lentisque. The Casa dell'Eroe overlooks this small island where Giuseppe Garibaldi, then 49 years old, finally set down his luggage in 1856. With the money he inherited from his brother, he was able to build a house that is now a museum. Since 2012, an interactive museum dedicated to Garibaldi has been installed in the fortress.
