In ancient times, it was one of the largest Greek cities. But Lefkada suffered terribly from the earthquakes of 1948 and 1953. Only a few ancient low-rise houses and Byzantine churches were spared. And that's part of its charm: to protect itself from earthquakes, the town was rebuilt with wooden houses featuring multicolored corrugated iron sheets. Even the bell towers are erected on scaffolding. You can verify this by visiting the town's beautiful churches: Aghios Nikolaos (18th century), Aghios Dimitrios (17th century), Church of the Apparition of the Virgin Mary, Panaghia Faneromeni monastery... Today, despite the rebuilding that followed the various earthquakes, the town has retained a certain charm, with its narrow streets full of life in the evenings, and its marina lined with tavernas.
