Welcome to Corfu! The capital of the island, one of the most beautiful and pleasant cities in Greece, is divided into two parts: the old city and the new city. The old town, which has remained intact despite the bombings, still displays an enchanting mix of European influences. Elegant Venetian buildings with balconies and typical shutters dominate French-style colonnades and harmoniously face the English colonial houses. The modern part completes the ensemble very well with large, green and airy squares where you can feel the heart of the city beating. The centre of animation is the Esplanade or Spianada, a large square created during the First Empire by Mathieu de Lesseps and inspired by the Rue de Rivoli. As in the Parisian street, the west side is lined with arcaded houses that house shops and cafés.
Listed by Unesco, Corfu benefits from a remarkable urban and port complex, dominated by its fortresses of Venetian origin. But its cultural richness is also due to its large number of museums, such as the remarkable Archaeological Museum, which reopened with its treasures in 2019 after six years of work.
Go there. In summer, ferries provide at least one connection per hour to Igoumenitsa. The port provides connections to Italy (Brindisi, Bari, even Ancona or Venice via Igoumenitsa).
